Her education was at her school, the Hyde Park Saint Thomas the Apostle Church elementary school. She credits her grandmother for introducing her to jazz when she was young. Khan was first exposed to the rhythm and blues as early as at the age of preteens. When she turned 11years old, Khan began a group along with Taka, which is also Khan's sister. In the late 1960s Khan attended several protests for civil rights together with her father's wife Connie who was a staunch advocate of the cause. Khan was a part of the Black Panther Party after befriending an activist from the group and Chicago resident Fred Hampton in 1967. Many think that Khan was a Chaka as she joined the Panthers but she says the Yoruba Baba gave her the name Chaka Adunne Aduffe Karifi when she was the age of thirteen. She left the Panthers in 1969 and quit high school following her time at Calumet High School, and Kenwood High School. (Now Kenwood Academy). She played in Chicago together with Cash McCall and his group Lyfe that also featured Hassan Khan. Chaka Khan as well as Hassan were married in the year 1970.
